Statistical modelling of annual maximum flows in Turkish rivers

چکیده

The lognormal, Gumbel, smemax, log-Boughton, loglogistic, Pearson-3 and log-Pearson-3 distributions are applied to the annual flood peaks series longer than 21 observations of 112 unregulated natural streams in 23 major basins in Turkey. The parameters of most of those distributions are estimated by the methods of: (a) moments; (b) maximum likelihood; and (c) probability weighted moments. A detailed chi-squared goodness-of-fit test is performed both with equal-length sliced histograms and with equal-probability-area sliced histograms, each one being repeated three times for three different but consecutively increasing slice numbers, such as 5, 6, 7 or 6, 7, 8 etc.. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test is also included. According to the evaluations of those three tests, a single definite distribution did not appear to be the best consistently for all the sample series taken, but the log-logistic and log-Pearson-3 models scored a larger number of better fits. Etude statistiques des débits maximaux de crue de rivières en Turquie Résumé Les lois de distribution log-normale, de Gumbel, du smemax, de log-Boughton, du log-logistique, de Pearson-3 et de log-Pearson-3 sont appliquées à des échantillons de débits de crue de pointe comportant plus de 21 observations et ceci pour 112 cours d'eau naturels dans 23 bassins versants majeurs de Turquie. Les paramètres de la plupart de ces lois de distribution sont ajustés au moyen de la méthode: (a) des moments; (b) du maximum de vraisemblance; et (c) de probabilité des moments pondérés. Un test d'ajustement de taille du chi-carré est utilisé sur des histogrammes découpés en classes comportant des éléments de longueur égale ainsi que sur des histogrammes découpés en classes dont les éléments sont de surface equiprobable. Chaque test est répété trois fois pour trois éléments consécutifs tel 5, 6, 7 ou 6, 7, 8 etc.. Un test d'ajustement de Kolmogorov-Smirnov est également utilisé.
